Performing Arts Opportunities
At MJCA, we believe the performing arts are an essential element of a well-rounded education, and we value this creative development in our students. Performing arts is part of the Fine Arts Department, and students interested in the Performing Arts have the opportunity to showcase their talents in a variety of ways.
MJCA Bands have performed for Disney and other competitions, perform in the Mt. Juliet Christmas Parade, and its members compete in the Wilson County Honor Band and Middle TN Band & Orchestra Association's (MTSBOA) Solo & Ensemble and Mid-State competitions.
Choir is offered to 5th grade, middle school, and high school students. High School Choir is challenged to perform a variety of style of choral music in a variety of languages. MJCA students have fun while stretching the range and scope of its members voices. Participating in Middle TN Vocal Association, MJCA students have the opportunity to compete and participate in Wilson County All-Sing as well as Mid-TN and All-state competitions.
Drama is offered to middle school and high school students. Students learn and actively participate in all aspects of theater from performance onstage to behind-the-scenes technical, costume and makeup design. Additionally, students are required to participate in productions each semester as a member of the cast or stage crew. Productions include a drama in the fall and full-scale musical theater production in the spring. Past Productions include It's a Wonderful Life, You Can't Take It With You, The Matchmaker, Guys and Dolls, Singin’ in the Rain, Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz, Anything Goes, and Annie Get Your Gun. Led by Kimberly Overstreet, MJCA's drama department is growing rapidly.
Preschool Music, Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade Music: Students experience singing, rhythm, and Kodaly methods in music class while preparing for various programs throughout the year. These classes train the students how to read music, sing in harmony, and to play their baroque recorder. Students learn musical practice techniques and how to control their own instrument while learning the written language of music. Kindergarten through 5th Graders participate in MJCA's annual school Christmas & Spring Concerts. MJCA's Preschool through 5th Grade Music is led by Jessica Yates.
Jazz bands students are comprised of middle school and high school students that are interested in learning the art of jazz music. Students learn through ensemble and solo opportunities within the school setting as well as in community and local competitions and performances. Jazz band is led by Beth Davis.
Middle school and high school students have the opportunity to further our school spirit by joining pep band. Pep band plays for pep rallies, football games, and basketball games. Pep Band and drumline students learn and perform popular music from today's culture. Pep Band is led by Beth Davis.
The MJCA Show Choir meets once per week afterschool and is under the direction of Kimberly Overstreet. Students in middle school and high school may participate in show choir with the permission of the instructor and upon auditioning.
Our regular chapel worship is student-led here at MJCA, and is mentored by Beth Davis. The group chooses the songs sung in worship and meets both during school and outside of regular school hours to prepare for leading in worship. Members in Praise & Worship Band are able to participate in regular practices, special ministry opportunities, and praise band workshops. Both Middle School and High School Praise Bands are student driven.
Middle Tennessee Performing Arts Academy is a performing arts school for students of all ages. MTPAA offers quality instruction in vocal and instrumental music, music theory, and drama. As a convenience to our families, lessons and classes are offered at the MJCA campus after school.
