MJCA ATHLETES SIGN WITH COLLEGES
Mt. Juliet Christian Academy's class of 2008 had a record number of athletes who committed to colleges to play for their athletic programs. Last years class of 31 students had 6 commit to play at the next level for various colleges. MJCA takes pride in the fact that the coaches promote their student athletes to the colleges and makes sure that the player's name and accomplishments are well known to the coaches at the next level.
Kate Walker agreed to play tennis for Carson Newman College (NCAA D2). Hannah Staggs signed this summer to run cross country at Union University (NAIA D1). Jonathan Roberts committed to Volunteer State (JUCO) to play baseball for them. Zach Womble signed with Free Will Baptist Bible College (NCCAA D3) to play basketball. Kristen Tewmey signed a scholarship to play volleyball for Cumberland University (NAIA D1), and Victor Underwood signed a basketball scholarship with Bryan College (NAIA D2).
MJCA is proud of each and every one of these student-athletes and encourages all of the current Saints to keep chasing their collegiate dreams.

ROBERTS 3-PEATS MJCA RECORD
Sophomore Saint, T.J. Roberts, broke his brother's (Corey Wills) golf record this year. The former record for nine holes set by Wills was 35 (1 under par). Earlier this year Roberts came in with a 34 (2 under par) at Hunters Point Golf Course. As if that was not good enough, T.J. repeated the score 2 more times in a row. Since T.J. is just a sophomore, we expect to hear much more from him as he represents MJCA in the sport of golf in the next few years. Throughout the season, Roberts has averaged mid to high thirties. MJCA is excited about the upcoming post season in which Roberts and the rest of his MJCA teammates will be competing. The district tournament will be held Monday (9/15) at the Legacy Golf Club in Springfield, TN. Pending advancement, the region tournament will be held the following Monday. _________________________________________________ WILL MJCA REMAIN IN D-1 OR MOVE TO D-2 ? Mt. Juliet Christian Academy faces some very tough decisions in the upcoming days. Next year is the new classification period, which means that MJCA will have to make a four year commitment within the next month. The decision that has to be made is to remain in Division 1 (non-financial aid division) that includes all public schools or move to Division 2 (financial aid division) which includes only private schools. Both are part of the TSSAA, but have very different challenges. If MJCA remains in Division 1, nothing will change, and we will continue to play the same schools. However, we will not be able to provide student-athletes with need based help on tuition. If MJCA does go to Division 2, we may offer need based financial aid to student athletes just as we do now for eligible non-athletes. Paul Christensen (athletic director) suspects that MJCA would be more competitive in football and women's sports, if we move to Division 2. However, he feels that it would be at least as difficult on all other men's sports (except football). The negative implications for moving to Division 2 include the amount of travel that will be involved, because the schools are more spread out. This may also have an impact academically. The positive side would be that we would no longer have to discriminate against student athletes when considering financial aid. Also, we would be playing "like-minded" schools and would not be subject to the multiplier. Ultimately, there are good arguments on both sides. So, please pray for the athletic department, administration, and school committee as they make this very important decision.

STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Senior, Chris Frazier, has been a model of what being a student-athlete at MJCA is all about. Chris has been a respectful and good citizen of the MJCA family. Fraizer has been a 3-sport athlete for MJCA and has excelled at all three (football, basketball, & baseball). He has done this while maintaining a 3.6 GPA. Chris was also recently named "Mr. MJCA" by the student body. He is also a member of the MJCA Student Council. Chris is the Saints all-district quarterback. He would like to continue his athletic and academic career next year when he goes to college. _____________________________________ MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL OFF TO A RECORD START
The Mt. Juliet Christian Academy middle school football team is off to its best start in school history. They now have a record of 3 wins and 1 loss. The Saints have picked up wins over Tuckers Crossroads Middle School, Middle Tennessee Christian School, and Hendersonville Christian Academy. Their only loss was against league leader, Ezell Harding Christian School. MJCA will try to improve its record on September 17, as they host Southside Middle School. The Saints currently compete in the United Football Conference, which includes 2 public schools and 4 private schools. MJCA is currently in 2nd place with only one conference game remaining. This middle school team shows the possibility of a very bright future for the MJCA high school football program. |
