CLASS COMPETITIONS

Seniors fought valiantly to maintain their dominance in the class competitions this year at Horton Haven, but fell short to the juniors.  Each class organized teams and competed in a variety of sports and activities to accumulate points for their class.  True class spirit is displayed through these events as each group has to rely on teamwork to achieve victory.  This year's competition proved to be the closest race yet.  All classes gave it their all this year!

Sophomores warm up for flag football.

Juniors re-group during a sand volleyball timeout.

Freshmen show their skills in the talent competition.

Juniors provide a live performance of "Stand By Me"!

A WORD FROM MR. SCHECK

September is here and the air is turning a little cooler. Praise God. We have completed over six weeks of school, and I am beginning to wonder if the days are speeding up, and we have actually less than 24 hours in each day.

Since my arrival I have heard many questions and received several suggestions in regard to where the school needs to be headed in the years ahead. We are committed to providing a quality education with which our students may enter the college of their choice. This requires much work on the part of each student as they develop their study skills, thinking skills and communication skills. As you know, it requires much sacrifice on the part of each of us as parents. I really enjoy watching our parents invest in each of their sons and daughters. These precious ones need the encouragement and love of each one. Moms and Dads, you have incredible influence in the lives of your children, even if the students are not willing to acknowledge it at this time of life.

OUTDOOR CLUB

HORNS CREEK TRIP

MJCA's Outdoor Club, led by Joel Walsh, took an exciting weekend trip (9/21-9/23) to Horns Creek Camp next to the Cherokee National Forest in Ocoee, Tennessee.  Students engaged in a myriad of exciting events while there.  High ropes course and adventure race tested each child's endurace and determination.  An intense game of paintball provided an outlet for healthy competition, while ultimate courage was tested on the Ocoee River rafting trip.  Thanks to Mr. Walsh for organizing this awesome opportunity!

TEDDY BEAR PARADE

The hallways of MJCA were filled with teddy bears of all shapes and sizes Thursday afternoon (9/27) as kindergarten students marched by pulling their hand-crafted "floats" with special furry passengers.  Secondary students, teachers and staff lined the halls and cheered on each of the participants as the parade passed by.

SECONDARY RETREAT

Preparations are underway for the annual secondary retreat to Horton Haven Christian Camp.  On September 19-20, grades 9-12 will battle it out in class competitions, brave the high adventure area, navigate the river in canoes and spend some time getting closer to God and each other.  Currently, students are working on bringing in permission slips and camp fees to homeroom teachers by Monday, September 17th.  This retreat has been an exciting part of our secondary life for twelve years now, and we anticipate another year of great memories ahead.

    HORTON HAVEN 2007

MJCA high school students left for their annual retreat last week at Horton Haven Christian Camp outside of Chapel Hill, Tennessee (9/19-20).  Students enjoyed three worship sessions this year led by David Kitchen Jr., a 2002 graduate of MJCA.  He challenged students to consider their choices in life and inspired them to choose joy despite the difficulties that life can bring.  He also asked students to evaluate their hearts and repent of those choices that make fertile ground for sin to grow.  Students also expressed their worship through song, led by senior Jonathan Roberts.  He was joined by Ethan Luffman on drums and Stephen Hughes on guitar.  These sessions provided a time for students to inspect their own spiritual condition and to ask God for the strength to become more like Him each day.

A WORD FROM MR. SCHECK

(CONT.)

I have been reading through the book of Hebrews and have been encouraged and challenged with the message. In chapter 12, the author talks about discipline from a parent to a child and relates this to God's discipline of each of us. God deals with each of us as we are His children, and He wants us to mature and be holy. Personally, I really do not like to be disciplined, but I am grateful for the discipline and instruction that I have received from my parents, my employers and those in authority over me. It has not always been enjoyable, but I have seen God work wonders in my life to help make me a better person.

Hebrews 12:4-10

4You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
"MY SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;
6 FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES."

7It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?  8But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CHAPEL

Middle school students got a treat in Wednesday's chapel service (9/5).  The middle school cheerleading squad performed a spiritual routine they learned at cheerleading camp this summer.  After the performance, their cheerleading coach, Mrs. Tammy England, spoke about the meaningful time the girls shared this summer, and the spiritual growth that was an important byproduct of this time spent training for their season.  These girls are not only cheering on their team, but they are also cheering on their classmates to grow closer to the Lord.

FUN IN THE SUN

The MJCA secondary retreat also provides students the opportunity to engage in fun and exciting activities including canoeing and the high adventure zipline.  Each year all over the campground, students take advantage of the time to relax and have fun outside of the traditional school environment, and this year was no different.  The weather was perfect, and everyone made sure to get outside and soak it in.

Juniors get ready to go canoeing.

The zip line is no sweat for one brave student.

Mr. Scheck takes the plunge.

Teachers get in on the fun with touch football.

Seniors prepare to canoe.

Senior girls get muddy during canoe trip.

A WORD FROM MR. SCHECK

(CONT.)

9Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? 10For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.  11All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness

As parents, we want our kids to be happy and enjoy life. This is very good. Yet happiness is not our ultimate goal. We are to help our kids  to prepare for the future, and to learn to deal with adversity, difficult situations and challenging people. I cannot think of a better environment to help our students learn these valuable skills than the environment of a God honoring, Biblically based environment.

I appreciate the prayers that you all have continually offered for our teachers, staff and administration. We also keep you as parents in our prayers as you work to raise and develop the next generation. Please feel free to introduce yourself to me when you see me at school, at games and out in the community. I am enjoying serving you here at MJCA.

In Christ,

Greg Scheck

HIGH SCHOOL ART

Students in Mrs. York's secondary art class have been creating more masterpieces.  Her classroom is filled with different forms and mediums each day, and she routinely displays the best of what her students are working on.  Take some time and visit the art room on the track to see what your child is doing!

Underclassmen display their intricate tin crosses.

Seniors have just enough time left to work on their masterpiece designs.

SAINTSATION CELEBRATION

PEP RALLY

Middle school students got behind their Saints Thursday afternoon (9/27) at the Saintsation Celebration pep rally.  The Saints will take on the Tuckers Crossroad Hornets tonight at home.  Cheerleaders got the crowd pumped up with entertaining routines and games.  One highlight of the pep rally was the discovery that several of our beloved football players had been taken "captive" by a rogue band of pirates (Mr. Walsh, Mrs. Spence, Mrs. Shoemaker, and Mr. Clendenning).  Thankfully, our middle school cheer squad was there to save the day!

Due to the uncertainty of the weather today, the presentation of the Saintsation court will accompany the Coming Home presentation tomorrow night at halftime of the varsity football game against Cornersville High School.  Go Saints football!!
