MJCA ART EXHIBITION AND SALE

In conjunction with the Fine Arts Festival (Tuesday, April 24th), which celebrates the performing arts, the visual arts department at MJCA will be proudly exhibiting our student works.  Each work is priced at five dollars each.  Proceeds will benefit the art program.

The displayed art can be viewed by classes during the school day on the 24th.  That evening, artists and their parents will be present at a special showing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.  At 6:30, the art exhibit will be open to all.  Any purchases made during the showing can be picked up at the close of the show (8:30 p.m.) or the following day.  Please come out and support our art department and our young artists!

DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE

Vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teenagers in America.  According to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Administration, nearly 7,000 teens die annually in accidents. However, statistics show that teen involvement in crashes declines considerably as young drivers gain experience.

As a result, the Ford Motor Company Fund and the Governors Highway Safety Association established Driving Skills for Life, a program that aims to reduce the number of teen vehicle crashes in America by providing professional driving instructors to assist students in problem areas.

Sixteen MJCA high school students attended this special program on Thursday, April 19th.  These students learned about hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed management, and space management on the roadways.  Mr. Pickle served as the MJCA faculty member responsible for supervising this event.

FINE ARTS FESTIVAL 2007

ART

Students, parents and friends found their way to our resident "art gallery" on the track during Fine Arts Festival.  Individual pieces completed by art students were on display and available for purchase.  The wide range of projects attests both to the ingenuity of art teacher, Mrs. Brenda York, and also to the artistic abilities of her students.  All proceeds from the art sale go to support the art department.

EASTER EGG HUNT

Middle and high school student council members organized a unique lunch period on Tuesday (4/3).  As a fundraiser, students purchased the opportunity to seek out "hidden" eggs stuffed with homework passes and bonus points from their teachers, along with a sweet treat or two.

Students met by the football field for pizza and drinks before the "hunt" began.  After eating, it was off to the races to discover the most coveted prizes.  It was a perfect day to be outside and enjoy a fun Easter tradition.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT:

ROBERT POST

2005 GRADUATE

Robert Post's most recent accomplishment sums up an academic and athletic standard of excellence that he set while attending MJCA.  This year Robert was named a Collegiate All-American Scholar at Cumberland University.  He combines a full load of academics with a demanding baseball schedule at Cumberland while maintaining the kind of grade point average it takes to be nominated for such a prestigious award.

While at MJCA, Robert was a three-sport athlete, took Honors and Advanced Placement courses, and was active in his church youth group.  He was inducted into the National Honor Society during his high school career and was an integral part of his school community.  After graduation, he began his undergraduate studies at Cumberland University on a baseball scholarship.  A pre-dental/biology major with a minor in chemistry, Robert has been on the National Dean's List and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and the Pre-Professional's Society.  He is also a part of the Baptist Collegiate Missions organization.  Currently, Robert attends Gladeville Baptist Church where he is a middle school Bible study leader.

Robert combines intelligence, hard work and a dedicated faith, and as a result, God has blessed him with success in his collegiate career.  We are so proud to call him one of our own.  Congratulations, Robert!

THE OCOEE TRIP 2007

MIDDLE SCHOOL OUTDOOR CLUB

Mr. Joel Walsh, Outdoor Club sponsor, planned a weekend full of adventure for MJCA's middle school.  On April 21-22, twenty-five students in grades 7-8 traveled to white-water rafting country in Ocoee, Tennessee.  Accompanied by three parent chaperones and Mr. Cappella, these students braved the forces of the river, rappelled on a nearby mountainside, and engaged in a paintball fight.  This overnight weekend trip provided just the right amount of fun and excitement.  An added bonus is that everyone returned safe and sound!!

A WORD FROM MRS. KITCHEN

A Father and a Son. . .an undeniable bond. . .an unthinkable separation. . .a heart wrenching sacrifice. . .an exquisite pain. . .a resounding triumph. . .an indescribable reunion.

This month reminds me just how bold the love of God is. His boundless grace wrapped in His remarkable plan for the redemption of mankind is celebrated through the simple exclamation, “He is risen!” We will sing it this Sunday. We will utter it with joy and astonishment. We will savor the power of that phrase and renew afresh our belief in a timeless God who would go to breathtaking lengths to have us in right relationship with Him. We will pause to remember that the ultimate sacrifice of His son, Jesus Christ, and His resurrection from the tomb three days later is the cornerstone of our faith. It is the reason our lives make sense in this world. It is the remarkable assurance of our place in the world to come. It is, simply put, the only hope of those who will follow after us.  The fact that Christ is no longer in the grave changes everything.  Standing in the long shadow cast by the stone that has been rolled away, we can never be the same.

I wish you and your family the peace of Christ as you celebrate the heartbeat of our faith and the miracle of salvation this Easter. He is risen!

MJCA SENIOR TO JOIN THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE PRIDE OF THE SOUTHLAND BAND

If you are Tennessee fan, you just got another reason to drive to Knoxville and support the Vols.  MJCA senior, Daniel Shedd, will be marching at halftime in the Pride of the Southland marching band.

After deciding to attend the University of Tennesee this next fall, Daniel set his sights on auditioning for the prestigious "Pride."  This three hundred member band electrifies the Tennessee campus all fall and also performs at other selected events during the year.   On February 24th, Daniel performed one trumpet solo in front of two judges, one of which was Gary Sousa, director of bands. On April 2nd, he received the letter he had been waiting for:  acceptance to the band program.  Being a part of one of the most well-respected bands in the country is quite an exciting opportunity for Daniel, and his talent and hard work have served him well.  Congratulations, Daniel!
