DR.
SEUSS TURNS 103

Members
of Mrs. Steele's kindergarten class proudly pose as Cat in the
Hat!
On Friday
(3/2), elementary students at MJCA remembered the most recognizable
children's author of all time, Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss, born
Theodor Geisel in 1904, was author of such classic tales as The
Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. Known for
his catchy and sometimes nonsensical rhyming patterns, Dr. Seuss
made it his aim to increase literacy among school-aged children
by introducing them to language in a memorable way. In all,
Dr. Seuss wrote 44 children's books.
MJCA
students remembered him with homemade costumes, homebaked goodies
and a sampling of their favorite stories. What a fun way
to remember such an important children's author.

FARMER'S
DAY

Members
of Mrs. Robbins's class dress up for Farmer's Day.
On
Thursday (3/8), first and second graders at MJCA celebrated the
life of a farmer. Some students dressed up for the day,
while other classes were responsible for planting sunflower seeds
in the afternoon. In addition, each class discovered the
responsibilities and difficulties of this interesting career path.

THE
BEE-KEEPER

Members
of Mrs. Webster's class learn about the life of a bee.
Last
Thursday (3/8), Dan Ostrander, husband of our very own Nurse Sue,
came to MJCA to educate students about bees. Wearing the
protective gear of a bee-keeper, he demonstrated the techniques
of bee-keepers while informing students about exciting bee facts.
We appreciate our special guest speakers!

ELEMENTARY
CHAPEL

Coach
Christensen brought in his chocolate labrador, Willie Wonka, as
a visual in his presentation.
On
Wednesday (3/14), elementary chapel enjoyed hearing Coach Christensen
speak about the power of voices in our lives. Speaking from
John 10:27, he demonstrated how we must choose to listen to the
voice of the God. Willie Wonka obeyed a few of his commands
for the students displaying the significance of identifying and
following the master's voice.

THE
UNIVERSE COMES TO THE CLASSROOM

Mrs.
Moore's kindergarten class has worked this entire month to create
a mini-universe inside their classroom. Now students have
a fun, interactive place to view the galaxy without going outside.
Students attached stars, planets and asteroids to the ceiling
and walls of the universe, and an ultraviolet light gives the
entire room the sensation of actually being in space.

THE
GOOD NEWS CRUISE

The
fourth and fifth grade classes at MJCA have combined to present
an exciting play entitled The Good News Cruise (3/20).
Fourth grade teachers, Karen Purvis and Randy Payne, along
with fifth grade teachers, Chelli Mosier and David Spence, have
been working with their students to get ready for an outstanding
production. The play is set aboard a Christian cruise ship
where all of the passengers, officers, and crew know Christ as
their Savior, with the exception of the new cruise director, Lostin
Leftfield. They embark on a cruise celebrating the abundant
life we have in Jesus Christ. The students presented their
play Tuesday night (3/20) and Wednesday morning (3/21) at chapel
for the entire elementary.

ALUMNI
SPOTLIGHT:
BRENT
LANE
2002
GRADUATE

Brent
Lane takes a quick break from his military repair work.
Brent
Lane graduated from MJCA in the spring of 2002. Little did
he know that the next few years would send him all over this country
and beyond, including a current deployment to Iraq. Now a
Corporal in the Marines, Brent is serving his country in Fallujah.
While
in school at MJCA, Brent was an all-around athlete. He played
football, basketball, baseball, soccer and even ran cross-country.
One glimpse at the athletic record-holders on our website will reveal
Brent's impact on each sport he participated in. In varsity
basketball, he is a part of the exclusive 1000 point club.
Amazingly, Brent maintained his academics and a part-time job during
those years along with his demanding extra-curricular schedule.
He
has transferred that same work ethic to his military occupation.
In Fallujah, Brent is in charge of all the mechanical needs on the
base from vehicles to generators. He is transferred from base
to base via helicopter to meet similar needs in the area.
Life is hard for these Marines where they work six and one-half
days a week, endure harsh weather swings, and live in less than
desirable conditions all with the constant threat of combat.
We are so proud of Brent and our other alumni who have sacrificed
so much for each of us. Our prayers are with you, Brent!

SIXTH
GRADE PROJECT SHOWCASES CREATIVITY

Members
of Mrs. Swink's 6th grade class pose with their projects.
After
reading The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis, students in
Mrs. Swink's class were instructed to create their own artistic
interpretation of Lewis's fantasy world called Narnia. Students
worked diligently to reproduce a variety of settings found within
the novel. Artwork went on display outside the 6th grade classroom
last week.

STUDENTS
WITH A MISSION MINDSET

One
MJCA junior, Naomi Kocher, is looking forward to summer! However,
her excitement is over the trip of a lifetime. She is currently
preparing and organizing financial sponsorship for a mission trip
this summer to Lima, Peru organized by Teen Mission Ministries.
Naomi will be traveling with approximately 100 young people from
around the country all committed to the same thing: advancing
the gospel of Christ. Her ministry opportunities while there
will consist of establishing a Vacation Bible School program for
the children and street evangelism. This two-week trip will
be both an exciting adventure and a spiritual inspiration.

CELEBRATE PI DAY

Math
students celebrate Pi Day with homemade pies, stained glass, and
creative t-shirts.
Mr.
Pickle's math classes at MJCA marked the all-important
significance of March 14th with a celebration of all things Pi!
Pi (3.14) is the circumference of a circle divided by the diameter.
Students memorized the digits of Pi while creating stain glass designs
starting with a circle. Some students even created their own
t-shirts in honor of this special day. Lunch was pizza and
homemade pies. This day is evidence that math can be fun!

HIGH
SCHOOL CHORUS PERFORMS AT DISNEY

The
high school chorus had the unique privilege of performing at the
Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida last weekend (3/9-3/13).
After making their way "backstage" in the park, the chorus
sang a set of five songs they had been working on this semester.
After the performance at Magic Kingdom, there was plenty of time
for fun at MGM, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. At Epcot, the singers
were amazed at the performance of the Disney group, The Voices of
Liberty. Choral director Mrs. Cindy Roberts, a former member
of Voices of Liberty, introduced the chorus to the Disney singers
and our choir was able to give a impromptu performance in that hall.
It was one of the highlights of the trip for students and adults
alike.

Students

SENIOR
TRIP 2007

Seniors
await their plane to Minnesota.
On
March 1-5, seniors from MJCA along with teacher chaperones boarded
a plane headed for the snowy white city of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Minneapolis was enduring one of its biggest blizzards of the winter,
and our seniors did not mind one bit. That only made their
day of snow skiing that much more exciting. While in Minnesota,
they visited the Mall of America and had some fun in the water at
a giant indoor water park. Thanks so much to Coach Jones for
organizing this trip and giving the seniors some great memories
to take with them.

KITE
DAY

What's
better than flying a kite on a warm, windy spring afternoon?
Well, nothing. . .and MJCA's second graders agree with that.
Mrs. Wilson's class joined Mrs. Webster's group for an afternoon
of fun on the soccer fields yesterday (3/22). Students brought
a variety of kites from home and watched them as they soared.
The biggest worry these students had was avoiding the occasional
plunging kite. What a great way to spend
the last hour of the school day!

SARAH
KELLY PERFORMS

Sarah
Kelly, a Grammy nominated musician, performed for the MJCA secondary
Monday afternoon (3/26). In this informal set, Sarah shared
with our students about some of the joys and pitfalls of growing
up in a similar Christian school environment. She encouraged
our students to develop healthy relationships with one another,
and she also directed our students to be in real relationship with
their Creator. Her soulful voice coupled with powerful lyrics
drove the message home. Students stayed afterwards to speak
with Sarah and also to purchase her sophomore release Where
the Past Meets Today.

A
WORD FROM MRS. KITCHEN

As
I look at the upcoming month, I see a time ripe with adventure
and opportunity. Even as I write these words, our soon-to-be graduates
are testing their skills as skiers and shoppers in Minnesota while
on their senior trip. In a week, the high school chorus will travel
to Disneyworld in Orlando to perform. MJCA buses filled with students
of all ages will leave campus this month on spring-inspired field
trips to various locations in the mid-state. Yes, this is a busy
time, but one marked by the excitement that trying new things
and visiting new places brings.
One
of the beautiful parts of education is the inspiration of opportunity.
In a time when the world can be brought to each of us with the
click of a mouse and a trip on a search engine, there is really
no substitute for going out to meet the world in all of its splendor.
The look on the face of a first grader at the Cumberland Science
Museum and the musings of a senior after singing on a national
stage share the same basic ingredients: wonder and awe. The valuable
lessons our souls are taught while experiencing God's great primer,
nature, are hard to duplicate in any other way. We are so excited
about the opportunities we will share with your children this
month and as always, so grateful for your continued partnership
with us.

TEACHER
APPRECIATION WEEK

The
PTO and parents accomplished an amazing task this week (19-23)-
they made all the faculty and staff feel like movie stars.
Using the world of movies as the theme, PTO provided a delicious
breakfast and luncheon, along with daily treats and messages of
encouragement. The cafeteria walls were lined with movie
promotional posters where teachers answered a series of questions
about their favorite actors and actresses. Parents also
dropped off gifts for teachers and wrote notes of appreciation.
The faculty and staff are so grateful for all of the hard work
and dedication it took to pull off such a wonderful week.
Thank you, PTO!
